Taiz – August 12, 2025
SAM Organization for Rights and Liberties today, Tuesday, held a consultative hearing to address the needs and demands of victims of human rights violations in Taiz Governorate. The event was organized as part of the reconciliation initiatives under the project “Supporting Peace in Yemen through Accountability, Reconciliation, and Knowledge Exchange (SPARK)”, funded by the DT Institute.
The session aimed to shed light on the needs of the victims of the incident of the oil tank explosion (“al-Qāṭira Fire”), the obstacles they face in accessing justice, and ways to ensure their voices and demands reach decision-makers. Discussions covered the victims’ primary health, economic, and legal needs, as well as the suffering endured by them and their families as a result of the incident. Participants also explored possible avenues for providing psychological, social, and financial support.
The hearing brought together 20 representatives of the victims, local authorities, and relevant stakeholders. The discussions resulted in a comprehensive matrix of needs and requirements, along with a list of obstacles and proposed solutions to enable victims to obtain their rights and achieve the sought-after justice.
Additionally, the session identified the roles and responsibilities of the concerned entities and civil society organizations to ensure fair fulfillment of those needs and to move forward in addressing the aftermath of the incident, thereby achieving redress and strengthening the path toward equity.
